Man Who Burned Koran Near Ground Zero Fired From NJ Job

An unsurprising yet still disturbing development occurred yesterday in New Jersey:

The protester who burned pages from the Koran outside a planned mosque near Ground Zero has been fired from NJTransit, sources and authorities said Tuesday.

Derek Fenton‘s 11-year career at the agency came to an abrupt halt Monday after photographs of him ripping pages from the Muslim holy book and setting them ablaze appeared in newspapers.

The government agency which fired Mr. Fenton attempted to defend its action:

“Mr. Fenton’s public actions violated New Jersey Transit’s code of ethics,” an agency statement said.

“NJ Transit concluded that Mr. Fenton violated his trust as a state employee and therefore [he] was dismissed.”

The question which naturally arises from NJ Transit’s decision is whether or not it is permissible for the agency to fire an employee for what appears to be the exercising of his First Amendment right to freedom of expression when he was apparently not on-duty for NJ Transit.

The reason that I characterized the New Jersey government’s decision to fire Denton as unsurprising is that it recalls the similar treatment given to 2008 Presidential Campaign figure Joe The Plumber.

After Joe Wurzelbacher — AKA Joe The Plumber — had the gall to challenge Candidate Obama regarding Obama’s statement of wanting to “spread the wealth around” in what sounded to many like a call for socialistic redistribution of wealth, Joe was set upon by both the liberal media and at least one Ohio government official.

As was the case with Joe The Plumber, Derek Fenton made the mistake of challenging Obama’s and other liberals’ wishes and ideas. And in the Obama Era, apparently, that means that Fenton had to face the same kind of reprisal which Joe The Plumber did before him.

As you might imagine, a number of people felt that Fenton’s loss of his job was out of order:

If Fenton was fired for burning the Koran while off-duty, his First Amendment rights probably were violated, Chris Dunn of the New York Civil Liberties Union said.

“The Supreme Court has recognized a constitutional right to burn the flag. As reprehensible as it may be, burning the Koran would be protected as well.”

Unfortunately, some liberals and those sympathetic to liberal causes are apparently no longer sure that Fenton’s free speech should be protected:

(Supreme Court Justice Stephen) Breyer told me (George Stephanopoulos of ABC News) on “GMA” that he’s not prepared to conclude that — in the internet age — the First Amendment condones Koran burning.

“Holmes said it doesn’t mean you can shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater,” Breyer told me. “Well, what is it? Why? Because people will be trampled to death. And what is the crowded theater today? What is the being trampled to death?”

Last week President Obama told me that Pastor Jones could be cited for public burning – but that was “the extent of the laws that we have available to us.” Rep. John Boehner said on “GMA” that “just because you have a right to do something in America does not mean it is the right thing to do.”

For Breyer, that right is not a foregone conclusion.

“It will be answered over time in a series of cases which force people to think carefully. That’s the virtue of cases,” Breyer told me.

This is Obama’s America in 2010. Keep that in mind when you take to the polls in November.

The former governor of Alaska wowed them last night in Turlock, California as she helped raise money for California State University (CSU), Stanislaus.

It was a terrific speech, one of her best to date, and thanks goes to CNM founder John D. Conservative New Media is very proud and appreciative to have been able to attend Governor Palin’s brilliant night. The fundraiser set a school record which will help numerous Stanislaus students, and the crowd gave the governor a well-deserved, and sustained, standing ovation at the completion of her address.

Yuri Foreman falls to 28-1 with the defeat. Miguel Cotto improves to 35-2 with his win.

Cotto’s victory sets up a potential rematch with pound-for-pound boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao defeated Cotto via technical knockout in November of 2009.

On Sunday, Dec 20, 2009, the Contra Costa Times (CCT) print edition ran a lengthy front-page-of-the-second-section story which we feel unfairly smeared Conservative New Media (CNM) and its founder, John D. Villarreal. That story was written by CCT political editor Lisa Vorderbrueggen.

CNM had anticipated how Ms Vorderbrueggen would portray us in her piece. We actually had scooped the CCT editor on what we figured was to be her originally-planned story with a series of videos we posted on Tuesday, December 15, 2009.

The video series discussed Robert Beadles‘ affinity for controversial talk radio host Alex Jones. Mr. Beadles, a Republican, is running as a candidate for the United States House of Representatives. He is one of several potential challengers to Democrat Congressman Jerry McNerney in the pending 2010 election for the 11th district of California.

As we detail in this series of videos, we believe that our advanced derailing of the preferred narrative for her Dec 20 story irked Ms. Vorderbrueggen. Her apparent displeasure, we feel, was borne out in what she ended up writing about CNM in her piece.

Our new, 11-part video series critically examines Ms. Vorderbrueggen present article. It also discusses Ms. Vorderbrueggen’s background as a reporter, as well as some controversies and criticisms which have dogged her over the course of her political reporting career.

* Lisa Vorderbrueggen’s colleague was taken to task by, of all sources, MSNBC for giving money to the Democratic National Committee. MSNBC didn’t see anything wrong with the donation and, according to the quote, apparently there is no policy against such partisan donation-giving at Vorderbrueggen’s employer, the Contra Costa Times:

* It appears that even the CC Times’ readers perceive the publication as biased. On the paper’s own site, this comment thread of Times perusers upbraids the periodical for its stilted coverage:

In fact, at least one reader felt so strongly about what he or she believes are the Times’ partisan leanings that there is now an entire blog devoted to monitoring and answering the supposed liberal bias found in the Contra Costa Times. Of course, this is a group of anonymous blogger(s) that Lisa Vorderbrueggen can’t assail by name and who are trying to act as watchdog(s)/whistle-blower(s). This may account for some of her apparent dislike of anonymous bloggers:

Was Ms. Vorderbrueggen paid to address the Contra Costa County Taxpayers Association? If so, by whom? Was the event partisan? If Ms. Vorderbrueggen was paid for her appearance, how might this have affected her remarks?

* Why did none of the following, or similar, information appear in Vorderbrueggen’s article about Conservative New Media? These pieces show that the practice criticized by Lisa Vorderbrueggen — being surreptitiously paid or volunteering to provide a particular point of view on the internet, anonymously or otherwise — is widespread on the political left and, indeed, on the largest blog (Daily Kos, a far-left site) in the political space. In fact, Lisa never mentions anyone on the left engaging this practice, which gives the wholly false impression that this phenomenon is confined to the right. Ha ha, the left invented it! Truth be told, the left practically owns the internet and new media, which is why we founded CNM.

In an exclusive interview with FOX News, Patricia Villa, one of the neighbors of Fort Hood suspect Nidal Malik Hasan, tells the reporter that Hasan probably was “all into his religion” (see 2:14):
